Lawn Health
A thick mat of dead stems and roots can smother grass. Dethatching clears it so the lawn can breathe.

Thatch is the layer of dead and living stems and roots between the green blades and the soil. A thin layer is normal, but when it gets thicker than about half an inch, water and fertilizer struggle to reach the roots and insects and disease find a home.
Zoysia and bermuda build thatch faster than fescue, so lawns of those types around Nashville often benefit from dethatching. We measure thatch first and only recommend it when it is really needed.

FAQ
If the lawn feels spongy and you see a thick brown layer at the base of the grass, it is worth a check.
For a short while. Dethatching pulls up debris and thins the surface, and the lawn recovers with good care.
No. Dethatching removes the surface mat. Aeration pulls soil plugs to relieve compaction. Some lawns need both.
